Hua Hin – Kanchanaburi

29th March 2014    240km     38C

Headed out this morning from Hua Hin, along the coast passing Chaam and then up route 4 to Kanchanaburi.
Along the way I took a bit of a diversion, to stop at the floating markets of both Amphawa & Damnoen Saduak. They were both fairly interesting, and the backroads had many interesting temples in the villages, so it was worth the extra time and distance to explore. All the tourists at these markets were Thais, mostly from Bangkok. One of the brilliant things at Amphawa was a parking attendant, who for 8 baht, watched over my bike and gear while I went exploring. Saved me carrying my helmet and jacket around, as well as the soft bags on the bike.

After and icy cold fresh coconut, it was back on the road and into Kanchanaburi for lunch. After checking into the Thai guesthouse, I went for walk for lunch, and found a little vegetarian place with a.cooking school attached. Normally I would not hunt out a vege place, but I figured if it has a cooking school, it must be good.
And the food was, delicious. I was almost finished the dishes, when I noticed that the fried vegetable dish could not truly be called vegetarian, as there was half a green worm in there. I don’t know where the other half was… Maybe some extra protein in my diet.

After lunch, I walked the 3 km into town to see the “Bridge over the River Kwai” and the war museum.

The afternoon was spent doing laundry, checks and lubing the bike chain, and planning the next stages of the ride, before heading to the night markets for some delicious Thai street delights. The Kanchanaburi night market is one of the best I’ve visited. Clean, organised and the food excellent!

Tomorrow is a non riding day, although I’ll be taking a trip to Erewan Falls by car. When walking around today, I could feel my body ‘settling’ in to the long days on the bike. With a bit of a tweak in my shoulders and hips. I’ll need to take care of those and make sure I stretch enough and am cautious of my posture on the bike.

  1. Catching up on the posts. You’re making brisk progress, and some fantastic pictures along the way! Just glad the sting from the jellyfish was on the foot and not somewhere more inaccessible =) Almost off the peninsula soon.

    • Yeah. I made bit of a rookie mistake with my Thai visa. I’ll write some more about it shortly, which is why I’ve had to pickup the pace. I need to be outside of Thailand by the end of next week. Stay tuned
