18th April 2014       145km       34’C What a day!  I had planned to wake up early to sort out the flat front tyre before it got too hot, so after a quick breakfast of a baguette with fried rice, as a strange sort of Asian-French fusion sandwich (my creation from the edible options available), I got to work figuring out if this flat was just a slow leak from the valve, or a real puncture in the tube. It turned out to be…

16th April 2014 Stung Treng – Khone Phapeng – Don Khong (Si Phan Don – 4000 Islands) Laos   165km   25-34’C I did not need to wonder for long, what the streets of Stung Treng would be like in the wet season.  It rained overnight, turning the streets into a stinking, muddy quagmire.  Navigating out of town was a slip sliding affair, I was watching the 150cc Honda Dreams in-front of me as they skated left and right, fishtailing up the streets, knowing that in a few…

15th April 2014 Siem Reap – Prasat Beng Mealea – Stung Treng       324km     34’C A simply fabulous ride today. The road that was supposed to be questionable and only suited to 4WD, turned out to be the best road I’ve ridden on in Cambodia. Route 65, a minor road, was almost all new apart from a few short sections of deep gravel aside from the last 2km to the ferry which was potholes and dirt. There was very little traffic, aside from little Hondas…

11-15 April 2014     101km I took a break in Siem Reap for 4 days and only rode on one of those days, to explore some distant Angkor temples.  So most of my transport over these days was tuk-tuk and moto-taxi. Angkor Wat and the temples in the area are simply amazing.  There is no way to describe the scale and magnificence of the temple complex. Here are just a few of the hundreds of photos from the exploration.

11th April 2014    206km     28’C – 21’C – 32’C The plan for today was to ride to Siem Reap, with a small diversion to Sambor Prei Kuk temple.  The Sambor Prei Kuk temple complex was built 400 years prior to Angkor Wat, so it seemed very appropriate to visit and take a look before heading to Angkor.  It is also fairly remote and not much visited by tourists, so that was some of the attraction also. It turned into a fairly challenging day.  Heading out…

10th April 2014       355km      32’C I woke this morning at 5:00am and packed the bike for today’s ride. I had expected it would be very hot, therefore the plan was to get on the road early and cover some ground before things really heated up.   I had stayed in a timber kampong house last night, sweating under a mosquito net with only an ineffective fan to cool me.  The net stopped the mosquitoes but not the tiny midges and every few minutes…

9th April 2014      101km     32’C @ 8am A short ride to Kampot today, which is renowned for it’s local peppercorn.  The town itself is a nice place, with some stunning examples of French architecture from that period in Cambodia’s history. As always, the Cambodian people are friendly as ever and always welcoming. The one exception is on the road where madness seems to be the normal approach to road rules.   In definance of all logic, one of the bizarre road rules in Cambodia…

8th April 2014    0km       32’C Today I took a boat trip out to the island of Koh Rang Samloem. Not a whole lot to say, other than the island is absolutely stunning.  No electricity, just a few bungalows on the beach, and simply stunning turquoise sea rimmed with white sand. Met a small group of Cambodian tourists from Phnom Penh and spent the day hanging out with them. Good fun.

7th April 2014      298km     32’C An early departure from Klong Yai meant a very enjoyable ride down to the Cambodian border town of Koh Kong.  The air was a cool 28’C at 8:00am and the road swept beautifully along the coast and through the narrowest past of Thailand, where Thailand and Cambodia meet. On arrival at the border, paperwork was processed reasonably swiftly, although the girl at customs didn’t really know what she was doing.  After visiting three different windows, and having my passport…

6th April 2014    154km    35’C Today was a beautiful ride from Koh Chang along the coast down to Klong Yai. The road was quiet, the temperature cool in the morning, thanks to a storm that came through in the early evening yesterday.  Other riders, carrying tables on their scooters, kept me entertained also.   I had left the hotel at around 8:30am, hoping to get to the ferry before the Sunday rush of travellers returning to Bangkok. On arriving at the ferry terminal, there was a…
